Award nomination for spin-off on quantum-safe digital payment

18.04.2024

Quantum physicist Philip Walther and his spin-off QUBO Technology GmbH are one of three nominees from the University of Vienna for this year's Science & Business Award.

The Rudolf Sallinger Fund's S&B Award will be presented on 16 May 2024 and honours commercialization ideas based on scientific achievement.

QUBO Technology GmbH, together with an industrial consortium from the payment industry, wants to carry out the world's first quantum payment in Vienna.

As quantum computers will soon be able to crack existing encryption, a new security standard is urgently needed for digital payments. Thanks to groundbreaking research at the University of Vienna, which was published in the renowned journal "Nature Communications", quantum cryptography based on light particles can be used to secure the payment world for the first time.
